Forest Biology & Tree Improvement
Natural resources and tree improvement programs stands valid in natural ecosystems and appear most effective in environmental imbalance and mitigation strategies. Keeping in view the urgency of the matter, The College of Horticulture and Forestry truly established in the year 2004. The Department of Forest Biology and Tree Improvement (FBTI) has its existence since 2007 with the purpose of education (Under Graduate), research and extension. However, since 2015-16, PG programme has been included in the curriculum of the department of Forestry. The P.G. Programme under the discipline of FBTI has also been started since 2018-19 with the intake capacity of 5 students. The conservation of existing forest genetic resources, biota (flora and fauna) and production of improved planting materials for the farmers, forms is basic insight of forest biology and tree improvement. The department offers a dynamic array of professional opportunities in biology and tree improvement via course work enriched by an active program of teaching and research. Through a suite of electives in addition to a required core, undergraduate students are pursuing their studies toward a particular field of interest. Graduate students may pursue master’s and doctoral degree within dominant areas of study, which introduce concepts of conservation of biology and biodiversity, physiology, ecology of plants and wild-animals, wildlife biology, forest health, global, landscape, urban ecology and environmental interpretation.
Objective
- To impart quality education in the field of forest biology and tree improvement at graduate and post graduate level.
- To generate scientific/skilled expertise in forest biology and tree improvement with hands on training for the plant genetic resource and biodiversity enrichment and conservation.
- To produce true to type quality planting material by forest survey, screening of valuable propagation material and conservation of RET species of forest genetic resources.
- To disseminate the knowledge and mass scale awareness through extension activities and training programmes.
